Introducing Baybayin through Karaoke

This Master’s thesis is a practice-based design project investigating how the pre-hispanic Philippine writing system Baybayin can be introduced through karaoke, a familiar and interactive activity within Filipino communities. The project addresses the issue that, while many recognise Baybayin as part of Filipino cultural heritage, few know how to engage with it as a writing system.

Rather than presenting a finished teaching tool, Baybayoke proposes an exploratory design framework that translates research into an interactive experience. The project’s contribution lies in the design insights generated through practice, and in demonstrating how familiar cultural activities can provide accessible entry points for engaging with unfamiliar cultural heritage.
