This Master’s thesis broadens the perspective on contemporary data visualisation practices, questioning what it means to make the invisible visible. At its core, this work aims to prompt viewers to reflect critically on the increasing presence and impact of satellite infrastructure, and to reconsider their relationship to systems that are often hidden yet shape the contemporary.

Starting with data acquisition, the first phase involved building a DIY ground station with an antenna capable of detecting and recording signals transmitted by Starlink satellites. This data, collected using consumer and open-source tools, was used to develop an installation for a non-specialist public.

The signal intercepted from below becomes an opening around which each individual can reclaim agency over a fragile commons. Through the sonification of the raw signal, generative visualisation and a diagrammatic representation of the phenomenon, the collected data is rendered in an atmospheric and emotional form, serving both as evidence and as argument.

The audience finds itself beneath an artificial sky, the ecology of which is invaded and disrupted by indefinite, menacing forms that, step by step, swarm through and endanger the electromagnetic realm.

The work derives its essence from the tension between global infrastructure and the embodiment of knowledge, between transparency and the meaning of data, adding a personal perspective on the relationship between aesthetics and the visualisation of truth.
