This Master’s thesis explores why ceramic, despite being the dominant material in modern bathrooms, often remains unnoticed. Drawing on theories of multisensory perception, embodied memory, and ritual, it argues that ceramic can become a medium for meaningful self-care experiences rather than merely a hygienic surface.
Based on a survey of 60 participants and interviews with specialists from Laufen, the research reveals a gap between ceramic’s sensory potential and its current use in design. It proposes a framework based on sensory presence, consistency, and intentionality, positioning ceramic as a material that shapes rituals through touch, sound, and repeated everyday interaction.
