Is There Anything Solid About Solidarity?

On Infrastructures, Practices and Relationships of Solidarity

Studium: MA Transversal Design
Jahr: 2026

In a political moment marked by wars, deepening social divisions, and the criminalisation of migration and solidarity, the question what solidarity means and how it materialises has become crucial and contentious.

This Master’s thesis explores acting in solidarity, solidarity-based relationships and their contexts, as well as the dilemmas and structural tensions that emerge as solidarity begins to take more solid forms.

The thesis draws on a practice-based, situated research and is structured around three strands: a collection of zines; engagement in a Community Centre for people on the move in Ioannina; and maintaining the Bleibeguide Basel, a multilingual digital resource supporting the right to stay.

By surfacing recurring dilemmas and contradictions within these solidarity infrastructures and practices, this thesis recognises them as fertile ground for collective discourse. It proposes solidarity as a relational practice, a way of taking a stand in an implicated reality and committing to acting and taking risks together.
