«If plants could speak»

The diploma project «If plants could speak» is an attempt to understand and acknowledge other living species, exceptionally #plants.

More and more #species, whether it’s plants, insects or animals, are threatened by extinction due to #climate change. The new generation grows up without being aware of that, as they have not experienced the diversity of earlier ecosystems. From my point of view, it is not the plants that are threatened, it is us. We shouldn’t forget that our existence depends on that #diversity. A #future without us is entirely possible.

If we want to see ourselves in the future, we need to move towards a #post-anthropocentric way of thinking, encompassing and acknowledging all species inhabiting this planet with esteem. Through #narratives – like stories, films or audio-visual installations, I found a playful and artistic way to communicate my concerns about our relation to nature. Putting ourselves in a plants’ position widens our circle of #compassion and makes us feel more #connected to other living beings. We all want to be treated in a manner appropriate to our species.

Concerning the title “If plants could speak”, I would now change it to “If we understood plants”. Plants communicate on a much larger scale than we do. Their #language is global.

If we understood and accepted this otherness, would we care more about non-human living organisms? If we understood better how everything on this planet is #co-dependent/interconnected, how would our #relation to plants shift?
